I recently had the chance to sit down with long-time friend Rob West, the CEO of Kingdom advisors at the host of Faith and Finance, about faith, retirement, and a better story for our next season of life.
Here’s the episode.
In it, I talk about:
- Redefining Retirement: I suggest that retirement is not the end of meaningful work but an opportunity to contribute in new ways, such as mentoring, volunteering, or pursuing passions that serve others.
- Faith and Purpose: I emphasize integrating faith into retirement planning, encouraging retirees to seek God’s purpose for this stage of life.
- Practical Steps: Our conversation includes practical advice on preparing for retirement, both financially and spiritually, and how to transition well.
- Stories and Examples: I share some stories of individuals who have found fulfillment and impact in their retirement years by staying engaged and purposeful.
My big takeaway: A biblical vision of retirement has three parts.
- Lay down past work identities.
- Embrace a season of rest, reflection, and renewal.
- Re-engage as elders—servants, mentors, leaders.
Hope you enjoy the episode.

In 2020 I retired after 45 years in corporate accounting and finance. His first thing I did was to attend a Kingdom Advisors conference where my wife and I attended your session on retirement. We left amazed by your wisdom for such a young man, and determined to retire to something, not from something. Fast forward five years and God has involved me in two fantastic ministries, as Billy Graham Rapid Response chaplains and as a director for Compass-finances God’s Way. My retirement has been used to evangelize the lost and encourage brothers and sisters in Christ. Our lives after leaving our secular employment has been so fulfilling as we turned our lives over to His purpose as opposed to our expectations. Thanks for your wisdom and insight. I’m acting as a retired Levite, “assisting their brothers.” Num 8:26. I can’t thank you enough for the counsel we received five years ago. By His grace alone, Jeffery Steelman, CPA, CKA
